How a military academy class became the center of an imperial civil war
In short: In the Erebonian Empire, a unique group of students is caught between warring political factions. Beyond the classroom, their field studies reveal a nation on the brink of collapse, where social class, political assassination, and mysterious ancient machines collide.
Set within the Erebonian Empire, the narrative follows Class VII of the Thors Military Academy in Trista. Unlike other classes, Class VII is intentionally designed to be social-class blind, bringing together nobles and commoners. The students, including Rean Schwarpend, Alisa Reinford, and Jusis Albarea, participate in field studies intended to expose them to the empire's internal power struggle. The student roster is diverse, featuring individuals like the engineer's daughter Alisa Reinford and the noble heir Jusis Albarea. Other members include the instructor Sara Valestein and the former jaeger, Fie Clausselle.
This struggle pits the aristocratic Noble Faction, which commands the Provincial Army, against the Reformists led by Chancellor Giliath Osborne. The tension escalates into civil war following the assassination of Osborne by a masked figure known as 'C', later revealed to be Crow Armbrust. This conflict is further complicated by the presence of the Imperial Liberation Front, a terrorist group secretly supported by the Noble Alliance. The political instability reaches a breaking point when the assassin Crow Armbrust challenges Rean Schwarzer in a duel using the Divine Knight Ordine. This clash follows the sudden death of the Chancellor during a speech regarding Crossbell's independence.
The story integrates elements of high fantasy and technology, such as the 'Master Quartz' system and the discovery of the Divine Knight, Valimar, within a shifting, mysterious schoolhouse. The game's mechanics, including the 'Link' system for character cooperation and the 'AT' (Action Time) battle system, reflect the deep interpersonal connections and tactical combat central to the plot. As the characters level up their 'Link Levels,' the gameplay mirrors the growing complexity of the empire's political landscape. The combat experience is enhanced by 3D character models and a streamlined Orbment system. Players can also utilize cross-save features to move progress between the PlayStation 3, Vita, and PlayStation 4 platforms.
