In short: When Kazuya Souma is summoned to another world, he isn't given a sword. Instead, he is handed the throne of the struggling Elfrieden Kingdom. Rather than fighting monsters, he uses his knowledge of politics and economics to implement radical reforms and rebuild a nation.

The series, known in Japanese as Genjitsu Shugi Yūsha no Ōkoku Saikenki, follows Kazuya Souma, a humanities student who finds himself unexpectedly tasked with ruling the Elfrieden Kingdom. Upon his arrival, King Albert Elfrieden abdicates the throne to him and arranges a betrothal to his daughter, Liscia. Rather than focusing on traditional combat, Souma leverages his academic background to address the kingdom's failing economy and standard of living. His unexpected succession includes a marriage arrangement with Princess Liscia. This sudden change of status leaves him with the responsibility of managing a kingdom in crisis.

Souma's leadership involves complex geopolitical maneuvering and the strategic gathering of talented individuals, a policy known as the gathering of the Gifted People. This process brings key figures into his inner circle, such as Hakuya Kwonmin, who serves as Prime Minister, and Poncho Panacotta, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, whose expertise helped end local food shortages. These reforms extend into military and territorial expansion, notably during the One Week War. His administration also relies on specialists like Aisha Udgard, a skilled warrior who serves as his personal bodyguard. Additionally, he utilizes the unique abilities of Tomoe, a Mystic Wolf capable of communicating with various animals.

The conflict with the Principality of Amidonia resulted in an unplanned annexation, leading to the creation of the Unified Kingdom of Elfrieden and Amidonia, later renamed the Kingdom of Friedonia. To stop the Turgis Republic and Lunaria's Orthodox Papal State from claiming the land, this expansion was a calculated tactic. Through these political and military shifts, Souma transformed a struggling realm into a unified power, forging alliances with entities like the Gran Chaos Empire. This strategic growth was furthered by the inclusion of Roroa Amidonia, a cunning princess who manages the Silver Deer company. Such diverse alliances helped secure the realm's future against external threats.
