How a side project evolved into a prominent metalcore force
In short: What began as a personal musical outlet for Landon Tewers transformed into a significant presence in the American metalcore scene. From its origins under a different name to its evolution through various record labels, the journey of The Plot in You reflects the shifting dynamics of modern heavy music.
The band's origins trace back to 2010 in Hancock County, Ohio. It started as a side project for vocalist and guitarist Landon Tewers while he was a member of the post-hardcore group Before Their Eyes. Initially performing under the name "Vessels," the project released its debut EP, Wife Beater, through InVogue Records, the same label used by Tewers' primary band.
The transition to The Plot in You occurred after Tewers recognized the project's potential and chose to leave Before Their Eyes. He assembled an independent lineup consisting of drummer Cole Worden, bassist Ethan Yoder, and guitarists Josh Childress and Anthony Thoma. By late 2010, the band had signed with Rise Records and began preparing for their debut studio album.
Over the following decade, the band's discography expanded through several key phases. Following their 2011 debut, First Born, they released the sophomore album, Could You Watch Your Children Burn, in 2013. After a period with StaySick Recordings, which saw the 2015 release of Happiness in Self Destruction, the band signed with Fearless Records in 2017. This era included the release of their fourth studio album, Dispose, in 2018, and their fifth album, Swan Song, in 2021.
The band's lineup has seen several shifts during this period. Following the departure of guitarist Anthony Thoma in late 2011, he was replaced by Derrick Sechrist. Later, in the summer of 2013, drummer Cole Worden departed the group to pursue other employment, eventually being replaced by Kevin Rutherford.
