In short: In the 2017 animated sequel The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature, the urban wildlife of Liberty Park faces an existential threat. When the unscrupulous Mayor Percival J. Muldoon decides to bulldoze the park for a new attraction, a group of animals must unite to save their home.

The film follows Surly Squirrel and his companions as they attempt to protect Liberty Park from the plans of Mayor Percival J. Muldoon. The mayor, described as a greedy and sadistic hunter, intends to replace the park with an amusement park called Libertyland. To achieve this, he employs an animal extermination squad led by a Swedish-accented officer named Gunther. This mission is complicated by the presence of an extermination squad tasked with capturing the local creatures.

The plot involves various conflicts, including a territorial dispute with a colony of white mice led by Mr. Feng and a romantic subplot between Frankie, a French Bulldog, and Precious, a pug. The animals eventually engage in a battle to stop the construction of Libertyland, which results in the mayor and his associates being arrested. During the final confrontation, the protagonist and his companion hijack a roller coaster to intercept the villain's escape attempt. This chaotic battle eventually leads to the arrest of the mayor and his henchmen.

Despite its production, the film faced significant commercial challenges. Released theatrically on August 11, 2017, it grossed $68.7 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. The film's opening weekend in the United States and Canada was particularly low, earning $8.3 million, which represented a 68% decrease from the opening of its predecessor. The movie's underwhelming box office performance was noted by industry experts, who suggested the timing of the release may have contributed to the poor results.

The production was a complex American–Canadian–South Korean co-production involving several studios, including Gulfstream Pictures and ToonBox Entertainment. While the film received negative reviews, a sequel is currently in development. The project was a collaborative effort between several international entities, including Redrover International and Open Road Films.
