In short: Season 28 of The Voice brought significant structural shifts to the long-running competition. From the introduction of the Carson Callback to a historic change in how battle rounds are paired, the show evolved its format while seeing Niall Horan secure a historic third consecutive coaching victory in his return.

The twenty-eighth season, which premiered on September 22, 2025, featured a coaching panel of Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg, and Niall Horan. This lineup marked the first time since season 20 that no new coach was introduced. The season was defined by several procedural innovations, most notably the Carson Callback, which allowed host Carson Daly to grant a second audition to an artist who initially failed to secure a spot on a team. Ryan Mitchell was among the artists to benefit from this new feature.

The competition structure saw major departures from tradition. During the battle rounds, artists were tasked with pairing themselves rather than relying on coach-led assignments. The knockout round also underwent a significant transformation; for the first time since season 4, there were no steals allowed. Instead, the show introduced the Mic Drop button, allowing coaches to nominate one artist for a public vote. The winner of this vote earned the opportunity to perform at the Rose Parade on New Year's Day 2026.

The season concluded with a two-night finale on December 15 and 16, 2025. Aiden Ross was crowned the winner, securing a third consecutive coaching victory for Niall Horan. This achievement made Horan the second coach in the show's history to win three consecutive seasons of his appearances, following Blake Shelton's run from seasons 2 to 4. Despite the hiatuses between his appearances, Horan also became the first coach to win his first three seasons on the show, cementing a unique legacy in the series' history.
