In short: In 1984, U2 feared becoming a predictable, slogans-heavy rock band. To escape their own shadow, they abandoned the studio for a Gothic castle, hired a producer known for 'weird' ambient works, and embraced a sonic experimentation that would redefine their entire career.

Following the aggressive, harder-hitting sound of their 1983 album *War*, U2 sought a radical departure. They wanted to avoid the 'shrill' reputation of arena-rock bands and instead pursue a more 'arty' and serious musical direction. This led them to move away from their usual producer, Steve Lillywhite, and instead recruit Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. While Eno was initially hesitant—even considering a career in video art—he was eventually won over by the band's 'lyrical soul.'

The recording process was as unconventional as the music. Eschewing the 'dead' acoustic environment of traditional studios, the band moved to Slane Castle in County Meath. They utilized the castle's natural acoustics, specifically a 30-foot high domed ballroom, though much of the work eventually shifted to the library to achieve a denser sound. The sessions were physically demanding, with the crew even relying on a temperamental diesel generator when the River Boyne's water wheel failed to provide sufficient power.

Under Eno's influence, the band treated the studio itself as an instrument. The Edge experimented with extreme miking techniques, placing amplifiers on balconies or at the base of staircases, while Lanois focused on enriching the rhythm section. This period of intense experimentation produced 15 additional pieces of music and resulted in an album characterized by atmospheric, ambient textures and 'sketches' of lyrics, marking a definitive turning point in the band's evolution.
