Raye's second album is a maximalist exploration of hope, emotion, and musical rebellion
In short: After a harrowing incident where her car and songbooks were stolen, British singer-songwriter Raye returned to create a sprawling, 73-minute record. This Music May Contain Hope blends jazz, soul, and orchestral pop into a theatrical experience that defies industry trends, proving that vulnerability can be a powerful form of artistic rebellion.
Development for the album began in late 2023, following a period where Raye felt constrained by the minimal, simple models of the music industry. She envisioned the project as a form of medicine, aiming to share a message of resilience with listeners. The creative process was deeply personal; for instance, she and Mike Sabath traveled to Big Bear Lake in early 2025 to write several tracks, while the song "I Know You're Hurting" emerged from a real-time conversation about men's mental health during her 26th birthday trip in October 2023.
The album is structured around the four seasons, with 17 tracks that traverse diverse genres including big band, blues, and even hip hop. Raye's approach is intentionally maximalist, incorporating spoken-word interludes and brassy arrangements. This ambition drew both praise and critique; while some reviewers lauded the project as an "epic Technicolor movie" and a "stunning showcase" of confidence, others, such as Alexis Petridis of The Guardian, felt the record occasionally veered into self-indulgence.
The release was a commercial success, topping charts in the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Scotland, and Switzerland. In the UK, it debuted at number one with nearly 47,000 album-equivalent units and achieved gold certification by May 2026. Beyond the charts, the album served as a platform for personal and familial connection, notably featuring a collaboration with her grandfather, Michael, on the track "Fields." By refusing to be pigeonholed, Raye has positioned herself as a bold outlier in an era often characterized by risk-averse artistry.
