How a failed attempt to get free ice cream created a film trilogy
In short: The Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy is a celebrated collection of British comedies. Yet, its famous name was not born from high art, but from a silly joke and a desire for free snacks during a post-film party, following a night of drinking and a very successful after-party.
Edgar Wright directed this collection of genre-defying tales, which he co-wrote with Simon Pegg; the set includes The World's End (2013), Hot Fuzz (2007), and Shaun of the Dead (2004). While the films do not share a single storyline, they are united by recurring themes of romance, the struggle with maturity, and the dangers of perpetual adolescence. Wright famously described his approach as a "Trojan horse," smuggling relationship comedies inside zombie, police, and science fiction frameworks.
The trilogy's distinctive name originated from a lighthearted moment during the promotion of Hot Fuzz. After the release of Shaun of the Dead, Wright and Pegg attended an after-party where they received free Cornetto ice creams. In a humorous attempt to secure more free treats, they decided to include another reference to the brand in their next film. This led to the inclusion of Cornetto cones in Hot Fuzz, where characters purchase them at a corner shop.
The naming convention also serves a symbolic purpose, with each film linked to a specific flavour. The red strawberry Cornetto in Shaun of the Dead represents the film's gore; the blue original flavour in Hot Fuzz signifies the police element; and the green mint chocolate chip in The World's End represents the science fiction theme of "little green men." The name itself was a playful nod to Krzysztof Kieślowski's Three Colours trilogy (1993–1994), a joke Wright made during a promotional interview.
Despite the comedic origins, the series achieved significant commercial success. A total expenditure of $38 million went into making these movies, which achieved a global box office of $156 million. The films also feature a consistent ensemble of actors, including Nick Frost, Bill Nighy, Rafe Spall, and Martin Freeman.
