In short: Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Three Colours trilogy uses the colors of the French flag to examine liberty, equality, and fraternity. While the films lack a single continuous storyline, they are deeply interconnected through subtle symbols and recurring characters, offering an ambiguous, ironic look at the fundamental principles of the French Republic.

Directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski and co-written with Krzysztof Piesiewicz, the trilogy consists of Three Colours: Blue (1993), White (1994), and Red (1994). The films are loosely based on the political ideals found in the motto of the French Republic: liberté, égalité, and fraternité. Interestingly, Kieślowski noted that the choice of French ideals was tied to the films' French funding; had the financing been from another nation, the titles and cultural connotations might have changed.

The connection between the films is woven through subtle visual motifs and character cameos. For instance, while searching a courthouse in Blue, Julie accidentally witnesses a scene that transitions into the beginning of White, where Karol is heard pleading to a judge. In the final film, Red, characters from both Blue and White appear as survivors of a ferry accident. Even the ending shots share a theme, each concluding with a character in tears: Julie de Courcy in Blue, Karol in White, and Judge Kern in Red.

Critics have offered diverse interpretations of the work. Film critic Roger Ebert notably described the trilogy as an anti-romance, an anti-comedy, and an anti-tragedy, in that order. Beyond the narrative, the films utilize recurring imagery to reinforce their themes, such as scenes of elderly people recycling bottles in Paris, which serve to illustrate the concepts of liberty, equality, and fraternity across the three installments.
