A Chinese studio reinterprets Arthurian legend in the upcoming action game Tides of Annihilation

Tides of Annihilation is the debut title from Eclipse Glow Games, a studio based in Chengdu, China, and supported by investment from Tencent. Built using Unreal Engine 5, the project began in early 2023 with a focus on action-adventure mechanics. Interestingly, the core combat system—which allows players to summon and command pairs of knights—was developed before the team settled on an Arthurian theme. The developers felt the role of a commander leading companions into battle naturally mirrored the legend of King Arthur, prompting them to adopt the motif.
To ensure a respectful reinterpretation of British culture, the team collaborated with Tsinghua University’s Academy of Arts & Design. This research included on-site studies in London, where the team visited landmarks like the British Museum and Westminster Abbey alongside local scholars and writers. The game’s visual identity reflects this cross-cultural synthesis, employing an East Asian ink wash style to depict a decaying, fractured European landscape. The narrative follows Gwendolyn, who discovers the power of the Fog—a force once controlled by King Arthur—to fight against the entities that have devastated her world.
The game’s development has navigated several public-facing challenges, including shifts in voice casting and technical feedback. Jennifer English was initially cast as Gwendolyn but stepped into an advisory role in July 2026 due to personal health reasons; Angela Sant'Albano was subsequently revealed as the new voice of the protagonist. Additionally, the studio addressed player feedback regarding character rendering in a 2026 hands-on demo, clarifying that differences in facial appearance were due to lighting optimizations rather than design changes. As of late 2026, the game remains in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with no official release date yet announced.
