How Timothy Omundson turned a life-altering health crisis into a powerful onscreen narrative
In short: Born in Missouri and raised in Washington, actor Timothy Omundson built a career defined by versatility, from playing a biblical figure in Supernatural to a musical king. After a major stroke in 2017, he navigated a difficult recovery, eventually channeling his personal experience into his work on television.
Timothy Michael Omundson, born in 1969, began his journey in the arts at age twelve at the Seattle Children's Theater. His early dedication to the craft included studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and winning the Jack Nicholson Award during his time at the University of Southern California. These formative years laid the groundwork for a prolific career that spanned television series such as Judging Amy, Xena: Warrior Princess, and the long-running Psych, where he became widely known for his portrayal of Detective Carlton Lassiter.
In April 2017, Omundson experienced a major stroke that significantly impacted his physical mobility. This event marked a profound shift in both his personal life and his professional trajectory. Despite the challenges of relearning to walk, he remained committed to his craft. He returned to the screen to reprise his role as Lassiter in the Psych film series, with his involvement growing from a small part in the 2017 movie to more substantial appearances in the 2020 and 2021 sequels.
Omundson's recovery also informed his creative choices. He took on the recurring role of Gregory in the series This Is Us, a character who is also a stroke survivor. Furthermore, in his 2023 appearance as Hephaestus in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, he portrayed a character who, like himself, is disabled and uses a cane. By integrating his lived reality into his performances, Omundson has demonstrated a unique ability to bridge the gap between his own recovery and the stories he tells, continuing to work in Los Angeles alongside his family.
