Tirupati Airport: A decades-long journey toward international status and private management
In short: Commissioned in 1971, Tirupati Airport has evolved from a modest regional facility into an international gateway. Despite being declared international in 2017, the airport only saw its first international flight in 2024. Now, as it undergoes a transition toward private management, the facility balances significant infrastructure upgrades with ongoing operational challenges.
Located in Renigunta, approximately 14 kilometers from Tirupati, the airport has undergone extensive physical transformations since its inception. The most significant recent development involved the expansion of its single asphalt runway, designated 8/26. Originally 2,286 meters long, the runway was extended to 3,810 meters, a project that reached completion in February 2025. This upgrade, alongside the installation of advanced landing aids like the Instrument Landing System, was designed to accommodate larger aircraft. The airport also features the Garuda terminal, an integrated facility opened in 2015 that covers 16,500 square meters and can handle 700 passengers simultaneously.
The airport's path to international status has been gradual. Although the Government of India granted it international status in June 2017, the first international flight did not depart until December 6, 2024. Even with the introduction of e-visa facilities in August 2026, the airport currently lacks regular, scheduled international services. Its history is also marked by a notable incident on November 15, 1993, when Indian Airlines flight 440, an Airbus A300, crashed into nearby paddy fields after diverting due to poor weather and fuel exhaustion. Fortunately, there were no casualties, though the aircraft was destroyed.
Looking ahead, the airport is slated for a major shift in governance. The Public–Private Partnership Appraisal Committee has approved a plan to privatize 11 airports, including Tirupati, under a 50-year agreement. This model involves a one-year joint-management period before full private oversight. As of August 24, 2026, the selection process for a private operator remains ongoing. This privatization effort is part of a broader strategy to modernize infrastructure, building upon previous investments such as the ₹1.75 billion spent on the Garuda terminal and the ₹1.77 billion allocated for runway and apron expansions. As of August 2026, five airlines provide scheduled commercial services, signaling the airport's continued role as a vital regional hub.
