In short: TobyMac, born Kevin McKeehan, evolved from a member of the influential trio DC Talk into a solo artist who shattered genre barriers. With over 10 million albums sold and multiple Grammy wins, his music has permeated mainstream sports broadcasts, major film soundtracks, and the Billboard 200, redefining contemporary Christian music.

Kevin Michael McKeehan, known professionally as TobyMac, began his career in 1987 at Liberty University, where he co-founded the Christian rap-rock group DC Talk with Michael Tait. Supported by university founder Jerry Falwell, the group navigated initial skepticism from some churches to achieve significant commercial success. By the time the trio went on hiatus in 2001, they had released multi-platinum albums like Jesus Freak and established a lasting legacy in Christian music.

Transitioning to a solo career, TobyMac released his debut album, Momentum, in 2001. His work is characterized by a fusion of pop, rock, hip-hop, Latin, and funk, a versatility that has allowed his music to transcend religious radio. His songs have appeared in diverse mainstream contexts, including NBA Finals broadcasts, NASCAR promotions, and films such as The Game Plan and Never Back Down. His 2012 album, Eye on It, made history as the third Christian album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, a feat not accomplished by a Christian artist since 1997.

Beyond his own discography, McKeehan is a significant industry figure. In 1994, he co-founded Gotee Records, a label that launched the careers of artists like Relient K and Jamie Grace. He has also authored several books, including works on Christian martyrs and American spiritual history, and established Camp Electric, a music camp for young musicians near Nashville. Despite personal tragedies, including the 2019 death of his son Truett, McKeehan has maintained a prolific output, continuing to release music and tour into the mid-2020s.
