In short: Known for his signature sunglasses and katana, Tomonobu Itagaki was a polarizing force in gaming. While famous for creating the Dead or Alive series, he used calculated public aggression and legendary feuds with rivals like Tekken to capture Western media attention and ensure his titles reached a global audience.

Tomonube Itagaki, a titan of the Japanese gaming industry, was far more than a developer of the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden franchises. While his technical skill as a graphics programmer at Tecmo was undeniable, his true legacy lies in his polarizing persona. Often seen wearing sunglasses to hide his expressions during high-stakes moments, Itagaki was famous for his 'to the point' and often aggressive attitude. A graduate of Waseda University's School of Law, he began his career at Tecmo in 1992. Early in his tenure, he was mentored by industry veterans Yoshiaki Inose and Akihiko Shimoji.

His legendary rivalry with Namco’s Tekken series is a masterclass in unconventional PR. After a radio commercial from Namco insulted his work, Itagaki launched a series of scathing public attacks, even claiming he would retaliate with 'nuclear missiles.' However, a later revelation by Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada suggests this hostility was a deliberate strategy. Itagaki reportedly apologized privately in 2008, admitting the aggression was a calculated tactic to draw Western media attention to his titles. This strategic friction extended to his views on the industry at large. He frequently urged Japanese developers to engage more deeply with Western audiences to help reverse the domestic market slump of the mid-2000s.

Beyond the drama, Itagaki was a pioneer of hardware-specific optimization. He famously pivoted to the Xbox because its architecture was more developer-friendly than the PlayStation 2, eventually turning Dead or Alive 3 into a 'killer app' for the platform. He also championed the 'spirit of gaming' found in Nintendo's Wii. Despite a career marked by legal battles—including a 2008 lawsuit against Tecmo for 148 million yen in unpaid bonuses—his influence on the evolution of action-adventure and fighting games remains profound. His later years saw him leading Valhalla Game Studios and establishing Itagaki Games. Even in his final months, he remained a respected figure, with tributes arriving from industry leaders like Masahiro Sakurai.
