How a Japanese game designer turned being blocked into a fan-favorite badge of honor
In short: Hideki Kamiya is a legendary director behind hits like Resident Evil 2 and Bayonetta. Yet, he is equally famous for his aggressive Twitter blocking habits, which fans have turned into a playful inside joke. Beyond the social media persona lies a creator deeply committed to maintaining his artistic independence.
Born in 1970, Hideki Kamiya entered the gaming industry in 1994 at Capcom. His early career was defined by high-pressure projects, including directing Resident Evil 2, where he navigated creative friction with producer Shinji Mikami. Kamiya’s design philosophy often centers on stylized, high-action gameplay. For instance, the combat mechanics in Devil May Cry were born from a glitch he discovered in Onimusha: Warlords, where enemies could be juggled in the air. This commitment to 'cool' and acrobatic action became a hallmark of his work, leading him to co-found PlatinumGames in 2006 after the closure of Capcom's Clover Studio.
Kamiya’s career has been marked by a persistent desire to preserve a creator's individuality. By 2023, he felt PlatinumGames was drifting away from this ethos, leading to his departure in October of that year. He subsequently joined Clovers, a new independent studio founded by former colleague Kento Koyama. The name serves as a nod to his time at Clover Studio. To ensure total creative control, the studio operates without outside investors, relying instead on self-funding and specific project-based financing.
Despite his professional stature, Kamiya is perhaps most uniquely known for his digital boundaries. He famously blocks users on Twitter for interacting in languages other than Japanese, even when he posts in English. This behavior became so iconic that being 'blocked by Kamiya' was transformed into a stretch goal for The Wonderful 101: Remastered Kickstarter campaign. Today, Kamiya remains focused on his next major project: an Ōkami sequel, a title he has long desired to create, which was officially announced in December 2024.
The transition to Clovers represents a full circle for the director. After navigating the corporate structures of Capcom and PlatinumGames, Kamiya is now positioned to pursue his vision for the Ōkami franchise on his own terms. His career reflects a constant tension between the demands of large-scale game production and the personal, often idiosyncratic, creative instincts that define his most celebrated titles.
