Tormund Giantsbane is the legendary wildling leader who survived the end of the world.
In short: A fierce raider and chief lieutenant to the King-Beyond-the-Wall, Tormund Giantsbane is defined by his immense lungs, tall tales, and unlikely alliance with Jon Snow. From surviving giant-infested winters to fighting the army of the dead, his journey reveals the complex, often brutal reality of the free folk beyond the Wall.
Tormund Giantsbane, also known as Tormund Thunderfist, is a central figure among the wildlings in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series and its television adaptation, Game of Thrones. Introduced in the 2000 novel A Storm of Swords, he is a renowned raider who serves as a chief lieutenant to Mance Rayder, the King-Beyond-the-Wall. Tormund is easily identified by his massive arms, which are adorned with golden bands engraved with runes of the First Men, and his heavy ringmail armor scavenged from a fallen Night's Watch ranger.
Beyond his combat prowess, Tormund is famous for his jovial nature and his penchant for outrageous storytelling. He claims to have once slept inside a giantess for warmth during a winter storm and even asserts that he once drunkenly bedded a bear. While he initially stands as an antagonist to the Night's Watch, the existential threat posed by the White Walkers forces a pragmatic shift. He eventually becomes a crucial ally to Jon Snow, facilitating a fragile peace that allows his people to move south of the Wall to escape the encroaching wights.
The character's trajectory is marked by profound loss and shifting loyalties. He is forced to kill his own son, Torwynd, after he succumbs to the cold and rises as a wight, and he later loses another son, Dormund, in battle against Stannis Baratheon's forces. Despite these tragedies, Tormund remains a steadfast leader. In the television adaptation, portrayed by Norwegian actor Kristofer Hivju, Tormund's arc concludes with him leading the surviving free folk back to their ancestral lands beyond the Wall, accompanied by Jon Snow and his direwolf, Ghost, after the final defeat of the Night King.
