How Toyota's GR010 Hybrid achieved a dominant four-year championship streak

Introduced in 2021, the GR010 Hybrid was designed by Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe to compete under the FIA World Endurance Championship's Hypercar rules. The car features a 3.5 L twin-turbocharged petrol V6 engine paired with a lithium-ion battery hybrid system. Its design was inspired by the Toyota GR Super Sport Concept, which was presented at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon as a potential road-going counterpart.
The car's competitive tenure was defined by immediate dominance. In its debut 2021 season, the GR010 won all six races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which marked the fourth consecutive Le Mans victory for Toyota. This success continued through 2022 and 2023, where the team secured multiple Hypercar World Endurance Constructors' Championships. During the 2023 season, the team amassed 217 points to claim the title.
However, the car's dominance faced challenges in 2025. After struggling in the midfield and failing to secure a podium in the first half of the season, Toyota lost its streak of consecutive titles to Ferrari. This prompted a significant technical evolution. Following a team rebrand to Toyota Racing, the car was updated and renamed the TR010 Hybrid for the 2026 season, immediately returning to form with a win at the 6 Hours of Imola.
The GR010's legacy is one of continuous iteration. From the 2023 focus on thermal cooling and aerodynamics to the major 2026 redesign featuring new sidepods and a redesigned front end, the platform has remained at the pinnacle of endurance racing, proving itself as Toyota's most successful sports prototype to date.
