Trace Lysette: From Ohio drag performer to a trailblazing force in American television
In short: Born in Kentucky and raised in Ohio, Trace Lysette navigated early struggles with family estrangement and financial instability to become a prominent voice in Hollywood. Her career, spanning from underground ball culture to major feature films, has fundamentally challenged industry norms regarding the representation of transgender actors on screen.
Lysette began her journey in the performing arts as a drag queen in Dayton and Columbus before moving to New York City. Her transition, which she started as a teenager, led her to find community within the city's underground ball scene. By 2007, she began formal acting training, eventually securing a guest role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2013. This appearance was historically significant, as it marked one of the first times a transgender person played a cisgender speaking role on American primetime television.
Her breakthrough arrived with the Amazon series Transparent, where she portrayed a yoga instructor named Shea. This role served as her public coming-out as a trans woman. Her work on the show later became the center of a major cultural moment in 2017 when she and other colleagues alleged sexual harassment by co-star Jeffrey Tambor. Following an internal investigation by Amazon, Tambor was removed from the series. Lysette has since used her platform to advocate for systemic change, including participating in a filmed letter to Hollywood in 2017 that pushed for better casting opportunities for trans performers.
Beyond her advocacy, Lysette has built a diverse portfolio. She appeared in the 2019 film Hustlers and starred in the 2023 film Monica, earning a nomination for a Best Lead Performance Independent Spirit Award. Her influence extends to music, podcasting, and documentary production, including her role as an executive producer for the series Trans in Trumpland. In 2020, she was recognized by Queerty as one of fifty individuals leading the nation toward greater equality and dignity, reflecting her evolution from a performer seeking acceptance to a leader shaping the cultural landscape.
