In short: Tracy Brabin transitioned from a career as an actress and television writer to become the first woman to serve as a metro-mayor in the UK. Her journey from portraying characters in popular soaps to managing regional powers for millions of people highlights a unique path into high-level governance.

Before entering the political arena, Brabin was a well-known face in British television and theater. She appeared in numerous iconic soap operas, including Coronation Street, EastEnders, and Emmerdale. Her acting credits also spanned various formats, from comedy sketches like 'Big Night Out' to roles in films such as Piercing Brightness and Law & Order: UK. Additionally, she was a prolific writer for television series like Hollyoaks and Shameless, even working on the prestigious She Writes programme.

Her political career began in earnest following the murder of Jo Cox. Brabin won the Batley and Spen by-election in October 2016 with a majority of over 16,000 votes. During her time as an MP, she held various roles, including serving as a minister for cultural industries under Keir Starmer's leadership. Her background is rooted in personal experience; she grew up in poverty and faced potential homelessness until receiving a council flat, a factor she cites as her primary motivation for public service.

In 2021, Brabin made history by becoming the first woman elected as a strategic authority mayor. She won the West Yorkshire mayoral seat with 59.8% of transfer second-round votes in May 2021. This role granted her devolved powers over transport, crime, and planning for a region of 2.3 million people across Leeds, Bradford, and Wakefield. Because the position's police responsibilities are incompatible with being an MP, she resigned her parliamentary seat to take office. She successfully defended this position in a second term in May 2024.

The mayoralty functions as a collaborative role where Brabin works with the Mayoral Combined Authority and local council leaders. Her current mandate focuses on practical regional issues: increasing affordable housing, improving transport reliability, lowering energy costs, and supporting business growth.
