The Type 212CD submarine is reshaping NATO's underwater defense through a trilateral partnership
In short: Developed by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the Type 212CD submarine is a massive evolution of the 212A class. Featuring a diamond-shaped stealth hull and advanced multidomain combat systems, this vessel is set to become the backbone of a 24-boat NATO operator community spanning Germany, Norway, and now Canada.
The Type 212CD (Common Design) represents a significant leap in naval engineering, designed to be nearly twice the size of its predecessor, the Type 212A. Its most striking feature is a diamond-shaped hull, specifically engineered to minimize its acoustic signature against enemy active sonars. Beyond its physical profile, the submarine integrates the ORCCA combat system, a sophisticated multidomain platform developed by kta naval systems. This system allows the crew to fuse sensor data from air, surface, and underwater domains, drastically improving interoperability with allied forces.
Propulsion remains a core strength, utilizing a hydrogen fuel cell-based air-independent system, now bolstered by two MTU 4000 series diesel engines to increase overall endurance. Instead of traditional hull-penetrating periscopes, the 212CD employs two photonics masts equipped with advanced Hensoldt sensors. The vessel is built for versatility, featuring six standard 533 mm torpedo tubes capable of deploying a range of weaponry, including the DM2A5 heavyweight torpedo, the Seaspider anti-torpedo system, and various missiles like the IDAS and NSM-SL. It is also designed to deploy underwater drones, such as the IAI BlueWhale.
The program is defined by deep international cooperation. A German-Norwegian Building Program Office in Kiel manages construction, while a Lifetime Management Program Office in Haakonsvern oversees maintenance. Canada’s recent selection of the Type 212CD in July 2026 solidifies a trilateral strategic partnership. To support this, TKMS has established extensive industrial agreements in Canada, involving local partners like Seaspan ULC and Magellan Aerospace to ensure sovereign sustainment capabilities. With production capacity secured at shipyards in Kiel and Wismar, the program aims to deliver a fleet that will serve as a cornerstone of Arctic and maritime security for decades to come.
