The musical, produced by StarKid Productions, premiered at Chicago's Greenhouse Theatre on July 4, 2013, and concluded its limited run on July 28, 2013.
The plot delves into the vizier's tragic backstory, revealing his past love for the storyteller Sherrezade and his eventual transformation into a powerful Djinn. In a twist on the traditional narrative, the character of Aladdin is depicted as a selfish, shiftless thief with a sinister split-personality. The story culminates in a complex resolution where the vizier sacrifices his freedom to save the Princess, who eventually brings equality to the kingdom. The narrative also suggests that Aladdin meets an ironic end at age 55, killed by a thief over a loaf of bread.
The production's success was largely driven by a Kickstarter campaign that far exceeded its $35,000 goal, raising $142,564. Although the creators initially intended for the show to be independent of StarKid Productions, a clerical error during the fundraising setup cemented the group's involvement, a mistake credited with saving the company. Following its stage run, the musical was released on YouTube on November 27, 2013, where it has garnered over 8.8 million views as of September 2025. Critics have praised the work as smart, lively, and hilarious, noting its sharp satire of Disney tropes and corporate history.
