In short: Known as The Cranes, the Uganda national football team has navigated a complex century of international competition. From their 1926 debut to a historic 1978 Africa Cup of Nations final appearance, the team has endured long droughts and stadium closures, consistently striving to reclaim their place on the continental stage.

The Uganda national football team, governed by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, has represented the nation since their first international match in 1926 against Kenya. Throughout their history, the team has participated in major tournaments including the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations. Their most notable performance in the latter occurred in 1978, when they reached the final, ultimately falling to Ghana 2–0 after a successful campaign that saw them eliminate Nigeria in the semi-finals.

Following their 1978 success, the team faced a significant period of absence from the Africa Cup of Nations, not returning to the tournament until 2017—a gap of 39 years. This period of struggle was mirrored by infrastructure challenges at home. The Mandela National Stadium, a key venue, was blacklisted in 2020 after failing to meet Confederation of African Football standards. Extensive reconstruction, led by the UPDF Engineering Brigade, commenced in 2022 to modernize the facility with new seating, lighting, and pitch improvements.

Despite these hurdles, the team has shown signs of resurgence. In the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, they secured their first tournament match victory in 41 years by defeating DR Congo 2–0. More recently, the team qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a result in a match between South Sudan and Congo in November 2024. The team continues to compete under the jurisdiction of FIFA, maintaining a legacy that spans nearly a hundred years of regional and international football.

The team's identity is deeply rooted in its traditional red and black kit. While they have faced elimination in various group stages and knockout rounds over the decades, their persistence remains a defining characteristic. From their early days in the Gossage Cup to modern qualification campaigns, the Cranes remain a central pillar of Ugandan sporting culture, constantly adapting to the evolving demands of global football.
