In short: Lesotho's football journey is a study in persistence. Since their first victory over Malawi in 1970, the national team has navigated grueling qualifiers, disciplinary hurdles, and historic runner-up finishes to carve out a place on the African continental stage.

The Lesotho national football team (LNFT) traces its roots back to 1966, following the nation's independence from the United Kingdom. The Lesotho Football Association was established that year, setting the stage for the team's official debut on August 7, 1970. In a promising start, they secured a 2-1 victory against Malawi in their inaugural international match.

The early years were defined by rigorous qualification battles. By 1974, Lesotho entered its first World Cup qualifiers but faced a heavy 1-6 defeat against Zambia in the second leg. The late 1970s and early 1980s saw a recurring struggle to break into major tournaments like AFCON, where they frequently fell to neighbors such as Mauritius and Mozambique. It wasn't until the 1994 AFCON qualifiers that Lesotho secured its first-ever qualification tie victory, defeating Botswana 4-0 on aggregate.

The team's history is marked by both administrative challenges and competitive highs. After withdrawing from the 1996 AFCON qualification, the nation faced a subsequent ban from the tournament, only returning to the qualifiers in 2000. However, the turn of the millennium saw a peak in performance: at the 2000 COSAFA Cup, Lesotho achieved its best-ever finish as runners-up after defeating Zambia on penalties and Angola in the semi-finals. Today, the squad continues to progress through CAF Group C qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

These milestones reflect a narrative of gradual development. From early heavy losses to disciplined group stage draws against giants like Zaire and Kenya, the LNFT represents the evolution of Basutoland's sporting identity on the global football map.
