In short: Known as Amavubi, the Rwanda national football team has navigated a complex journey through African football. From their historic first Africa Cup of Nations appearance in 2004 to recent managerial shifts, the squad's history is a story of hard-fought victories and the constant search for stability.

The Rwanda national football team, nicknamed Amavubi—Kinyarwanda for 'The Wasps'—competes under the governance of the Rwandan Football Federation. While the team has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup finals, they achieved a significant milestone by reaching their first Africa Cup of Nations in 2004. During that tournament, they secured a historic 1–0 victory over DR Congo, though they were ultimately eliminated from the competition. They also secured their first point in the competition through a draw with Guinea. Despite this success, they failed to progress past the group stage.

The team's journey has been marked by frequent changes in leadership. Between 2007 and 2015, the squad saw a succession of managers, including Josip Kuže, Branko Tucak, and Sellas Tetteh. Some tenures were notably brief; Kuže departed just two months after his appointment in 2007, while Johnathan McKinstry, who guided the team to a significant away win against Mozambique in 2015, was sacked only five months into a new contract. Other managers included Milutin Sredojević and Stephen Constantine. The latter was forced to resign in early 2015 to lead the Indian national side.

Beyond the pitch, the team's identity has evolved alongside the nation. Following the adoption of a new Rwandan flag in 2001, the team's kit colors were updated to a yellow jersey, blue shorts, and green socks. While Adidas has been a long-term manufacturer, the team has also worked with other outfitters like L-sport and AMS. Today, the team continues to compete in major continental tournaments, striving to build on their historical successes in the CAF and CECAFA regions. The squad's official FIFA abbreviation is RWA. Locally, the team is frequently referred to as the RR XI.
