Why Britain’s elite commando force once avoided the name Special Service
In short: Formed in 1943, the United Kingdom Commando Force has evolved from a wartime experiment into a modern, multi-branch powerhouse. Yet, its early identity was plagued by a branding crisis: the original name sounded too much like the infamous Nazi SS, forcing a pivot to the now-legendary Commando title.
The formation began on 1 September 1943 in Dorchester as the 3rd Special Service Brigade. Initially, the unit faced a public relations hurdle. While the term Commando was reserved for smaller, battalion-sized groups, the brigade was officially designated Special Service. This was deeply unpopular among the troops, largely because the acronym SS bore a superficial, uncomfortable resemblance to the Schutzstaffel of Nazi Germany. By the time the unit matured, it had transitioned to the title 3rd Commando Brigade, a name that would eventually define its legacy across global conflicts.
The brigade’s operational history is a study in rapid adaptation. After its inception, it was intended for the South-East Asian theatre, but logistical constraints meant its components were not fully united until late 1944. By 1945, it was engaged in the recapture of the Myebon peninsula and Kangaw. Following the war, the unit underwent a significant structural shift; the Army Commandos were disbanded, and it became a dedicated Royal Marine formation. This identity persisted for decades, seeing action in the Suez Crisis, the Falklands War, and the Gulf War, where it provided critical humanitarian aid to Iraqi Kurds.
In the 2020s, the force underwent a major transformation, rebranding to the United Kingdom Commando Force by 2024. This shift marked a return to its roots as a joint formation. It now integrates specialized personnel from the British Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force alongside Royal Marine Commandos. This modern structure, which includes support from the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers, allows the force to maintain its status as a special operations-capable entity, capable of rapid deployment and complex amphibious maneuvers that have been its hallmark since the Second World War.
