The University of Houston once pioneered air-conditioned learning in the United States
In short: Before it became a major research hub, the University of Houston was a modest junior college operating out of churches and high schools. Its transformation into a permanent campus included a historic architectural milestone: the construction of the first air-conditioned college building on any American university campus in 1939.
Founded in 1927 as Houston Junior College, the institution initially focused on training teachers through night courses held at San Jacinto High School. It operated under the Houston Independent School District, with its first classes enrolling 232 students. By 1934, the school transitioned into a four-year degree-granting institution, officially adopting the name University of Houston. This evolution was solidified when the state governor signed legislation in 1933 allowing for the university's expansion.
The search for a permanent home led to a 110-acre land donation from philanthropists J.J. Settegast and Ben Taub in 1936. To make the site accessible, the city constructed a new road, later known as Cullen Boulevard. Hugh Roy Cullen provided $335,000 to fund the first permanent structure, the Roy Gustav Cullen Memorial Building. Dedicated in 1939, this facility was a technological marvel of its time, serving as the first air-conditioned college building in the U.S. and setting a new standard for campus infrastructure.
Today, the University of Houston serves as the flagship of its own university system, distinct from the University of Texas System, which maintains its own massive network of campuses and health centers across the state. While the University of Texas at Austin remains one of the largest campuses in the country with nearly 50,000 students, the University of Houston has carved out its own identity as a tier-one research university. It now offers over 300 degree programs and maintains a significant research footprint, spanning fields from superconductivity to artificial intelligence.
