In short: In 1968, it was merely a modest air wing under British rule. Decades later, the United Arab Emirates Air Force commands nearly 600 aircraft and a massive $10 billion fleet, evolving from a local transport service into a sophisticated, NATO-standard aerial power.

The origins of the UAE Air Force trace back to May 1968, when it began as a small component of the Trucial Oman Scouts. Initially known as the Air Wing of the Abu Dhabi Defence Force, its primary mission was providing ground support and transport capabilities. During the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, these early Caribou aircraft even served as air ambulances in Jordan.

The force underwent significant transformation through strategic international partnerships. In its formative years, the UAE relied on officers from Britain, Jordan, and Pakistan for training, with the Pakistan Air Force providing essential instruction. By the late 1990s, the air components of Dubai and Abu Dhabi were merged into the unified UAE Air Force we recognize today.

Modernization has been driven by massive capital investments. A landmark procurement program around 2007 saw the acquisition of 80 F-16E/F Block 60 'Desert Falcons' and 60 upgraded Mirage 2000-9 jets, costing approximately $10 billion. This expansion included a $6.4 billion contract with Lockheed Martin for F-16s and a $3.4 billion deal for Mirage aircraft.

Today, the force maintains a high-tech presence, including the Al Dhafra Air Base and the massive Al-Safran facility, which features a 4,000-meter runway. The fleet now includes roughly 592 aircraft and 4,000 personnel, capable of complex international operations ranging from the 1991 Gulf War to more recent missions in Libya and Syria.
