How a regional California soccer league grew into a massive national American soccer force
In short: Founded in 2011 with just ten teams in Santa Ana, the United Premier Soccer League has exploded into a sprawling network of over 900 clubs across North America. Operating as a for-profit entity, it now functions as an unofficial fourth tier of the American soccer pyramid, complete with internal promotion and relegation.
The United Premier Soccer League, or UPSL, began as a modest project under Santa Ana Winds President Leonel López. Initially designed to serve the Greater Los Angeles area, the league has since expanded its footprint to include teams in all 50 states, as well as Canada and Mexico. As of the 2026 season, the organization manages a vast ecosystem of over 900 independently owned and operated men's and women's clubs. It is officially recognized as a National Affiliate member of the United States Soccer Federation.
The league structure is defined by its high-frequency calendar, running two distinct seasons every year. The Spring season kicks off in March and concludes with national playoffs in July, while the Fall season begins in September and ends in December. Within this framework, the league implements its own promotion and relegation system, splitting teams into tiers like the Premier Division and Division One, with a new Division 2 set to launch in the fall of 2026. Only clubs competing in the top-tier Premier Division are eligible to vie for the national championship.
Open Cup. Historically, teams like PSA Elite and La Máquina FC made significant runs in the tournament by defeating established professional sides. Although the number of UPSL teams qualifying through traditional rounds has fluctuated—partly due to increased competition for slots from other leagues—the UPSL secured a guaranteed spot in the first round of the Open Cup starting in 2024. This automatic berth is awarded to the league's Spring Champions, with clubs like AS Frenzi, Soda City FC, and Tennessee Tempo FC earning the honor in recent years.
