From colonial medical training to a modern green campus, the University of Indonesia evolves.
In short: Tracing its roots to an 1849 medical school for Javanese assistants, the University of Indonesia has transformed into a premier research institution. Today, it operates a massive, sustainable campus in Depok, featuring a solar-powered library and a unique transit system designed to minimize the university's environmental footprint.
The University of Indonesia, or Universitas Indonesia (UI), traces its origins to the School of Health Sciences and Vaccines, established in 1849 to train medical assistants in the Dutch East Indies. This institution evolved through various iterations, including the medical school STOVIA and the GHS, which eventually became the foundation for the university's Faculty of Medicine. Following Indonesia's independence, the university was formally established in 1950, consolidating various colleges and faculties that had operated across the archipelago.
Modern UI is defined by its expansive Depok campus, a site developed in the mid-1980s to modernize the institution. The campus is a model of sustainability, featuring six lakes and a commitment to reforestation that covers 75% of its land. The university's central library, known as the Crystal of Knowledge, is a landmark of this green initiative. Opened in 2011, the 33,000-square-meter facility utilizes solar energy and is designed to be entirely smoke-free and resource-efficient.
Beyond its physical infrastructure, UI maintains a strong academic reputation, ranking first in Indonesia in the 2024 QS World Universities Ranking. The university's commitment to sustainability extends to its global influence, having established the GreenMetric World University Ranking in 2010 to encourage other institutions to reduce carbon emissions. With 14 faculties and two schools, the university continues to play a central role in Indonesian education, supported by a rich history that includes Nobel Prize-winning research by former director Christiaan Eijkman.
