In short: Since 1755, Vacheron Constantin has maintained an uninterrupted history of horology. From Enlightenment-era philosophers to modern-day record-breaking pocket watches, this Swiss manufacturer has consistently pushed the limits of mechanical engineering, recently unveiling a timepiece with an astounding 63 complications.

Founded in 1755 by Jean-Marc Vacheron in Geneva, the company has operated without interruption for centuries. The founder was a close associate of Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, sharing interests in science and watchmaking. This legacy of innovation continued through the 19th century, notably when Georges-Auguste Leschot joined in 1833 and became the first to standardize watch movements into Calibers.

The brand is a cornerstone of the 'Holy Trinity' of luxury watchmaking, alongside Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet. Its pursuit of complexity is legendary; in 2015, the company released the Reference 57260, a pocket watch with 57 complications that took three watchmakers eight years to construct. This record was recently surpassed in 2024 by the Les Cabinotiers - The Berkley Grand Complication, which features 63 complications and includes the first Chinese perpetual calendar.

Vacheron Constantin's history is also marked by high-stakes auctions and royal patronage. The pocket watch No. 402833, originally owned by King Fuad I of Egypt, sold for US$2.77 million in Geneva in 2005. While the company has faced industry-wide shifts, such as the quartz crisis of the 1970s and 1980s, it remains a subsidiary of the Swiss Richemont Group, having been acquired in 1996.

Beyond pure mechanics, the brand is known for its distinctive Maltese cross symbol, adopted in 1880. This emblem was inspired by a cross-shaped component of the barrel used to limit mainspring tension. Today, the company produces approximately 20,000 timepieces annually, maintaining its reputation for extreme precision and artistic mastery.
