The Swiss watchmaker who mastered the art of the complication
In short: In the world of high horology, a 'complication' is any function beyond simple timekeeping. While most brands stick to the basics, Franck Muller built an empire on the most difficult mechanics imaginable, moving from repairing museum pieces to designing world-first timepieces that defy standard watch design.
Franck Muller’s journey into luxury began not with a brand, but with a mastery of the existing. After graduating from the Watchmaking School of Geneva in the early 1980s, Muller began repairing high-quality pocket watches. His expertise was such that he was entrusted with the Patek Philippe collection, serving private individuals and museums. This period of handling some of the world's most intricate mechanisms fueled his ambition to move from maintenance to creation.
In 1984, Muller achieved a significant milestone by designing his own tourbillon wristwatch. At the time, very few watchmakers—most notably Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin—possessed the technical capability to produce such complex pieces. This technical prowess allowed him to build a loyal clientele of private collectors, eventually leading to the official opening of the House of Franck Muller in 1991.
The brand quickly expanded across Europe and the United States, establishing a reputation for high-end exclusivity. Today, the brand is defined by its slogan, "Master of Complications," and its "World Premiers," a tradition of launching at least one new line of exclusive timepieces annually since 1993. Their designs are a deliberate fusion of traditional Swiss manufacturing and a "modern" aesthetic inspired by 1930s American watches, such as the "Elgin tonneau." From the limited-run Curvex Minute Repeater Tourbillon—produced in only 25 pieces—to the Encrypto, which functions as a crypto wallet, the brand balances historical mechanical complexity with contemporary utility.
