In short: In 2007, WWE merged three distinct identities into one night of championship warfare. But while the fans saw a spectacle of athletic competition, the promotion was grappling with a tragedy that would lead to the permanent erasure of a legendary performer from their history.

On 24 June 2007, the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, hosted Vengeance: Night of Champions, marking a major organisational transition for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It was the first time since 2002 that the promotion featured multiple brands—Raw, SmackDown!, and the newly introduced ECW—on a single pay-per-view. WWE utilised a concept first seen during the March 2001 WCW Monday Nitro finale, where every current title in the organisation was scheduled for defence.

The event was a showcase of high-stakes rivalries, including a fatal five-way match for the WWE Championship and a 'Last Chance' match for the World Heavyweight Championship. However, the night is historically overshadowed by the absence of Chris Benoit. Originally booked to defeat CM Punk for the vacant ECW World Championship, Benoit failed to appear. He was replaced by Johnny Nitro, who won the title. It was only after the event that the public learned Benoit had murdered his wife and son before committing suicide.

The fallout was immediate and profound. WWE pivoted from a planned three-hour memorial for 'Mr. McMahon' to a tribute for Benoit, before ultimately deciding to scrub nearly all mentions of the wrestler from their website, future broadcasts, and publications. This moment marked a rare instance where the internal mechanics of a corporate brand had to reconcile a scripted narrative with a devastating real-world tragedy, forever altering how the promotion managed its legacy.
