In short: In the 1860s, Dr. John Ellis traveled to Pennsylvania to study crude oil as a medicine. He failed to find a cure, but he discovered the substance was a superior lubricant for industrial machinery. That accidental pivot created Valvoline, a brand that eventually defined the standards for modern engine performance.

The origins of Valvoline trace back to the mid-19th century when Dr. John Ellis, a Massachusetts physician, investigated petroleum for its potential medicinal properties. Upon realizing its true value lay in mechanical lubrication, he developed his own refining equipment. By 1866, he established the Continuous Oil Refining Company in New York to supply steam engines. He initially branded his product Binghamton Cylinder Oil, but he soon rebranded it to the more distinct Valvoline. The company gained early recognition at the 1878 Paris Exhibition and became the recommended oil for the Ford Model T in the early 20th century.

Throughout the 20th century, the company underwent significant corporate shifts. Ashland Inc. acquired the business in 1949, and by 2016, the Valvoline subsidiary represented roughly 37% of its parent company's total revenue. The brand transitioned into an independent entity following a stock market debut in 2016 and a subsequent corporate spin-off in 2017. In 2022, Saudi Aramco purchased the Valvoline lubricant division for US$2.65 billion. As of 2023, the company operates over 1,650 locations, holding a 10% share of the United States oil change market.

Beyond its retail presence, Valvoline has cultivated a deep connection to motorsport culture. Its association with racing began in the 1890s and expanded significantly through NASCAR sponsorships starting in 1981. The brand has supported legendary drivers such as Mark Martin and Janet Guthrie, and it has even ventured into team ownership. Today, its influence extends to international sports, including partnerships with the Sevilla FC football club and the Aston Martin Formula One team. The company continues to evolve, with plans to relocate its headquarters to Cincinnati by 2027.
