The cinematic evolution of a 'bromantic' symbiotic relationship
In short: When a superhero movie moves from a solo origin story to a domestic dynamic, the stakes shift from survival to cohabitation. In Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the focus isn't just on fighting monsters, but on the friction of two entities trying to share a single life.
The transition from the 2018 film to its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, was defined by a shift in narrative focus. While the first film established the bond between journalist Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote Venom, director Andy Serkis described the sequel as the 'Odd Couple stage.' The goal was to explore the domestic friction of living together, evolving the dynamic into what producer Ruben Fleischer called a 'bromantic' relationship.
This creative pivot was supported by specific casting and production choices. Woody Harrelson was cast as Cletus Kasady, a psychotic serial killer who becomes the host for Carnage, a violent offshoot of Venom. Harrelson’s involvement was a deliberate move to find a 'natural connection' to his previous performance in Natural Born Killers (1994). Additionally, Serkis was hired specifically for his expertise in CGI and motion-capture technology to handle the complex visual requirements of the two primary symbiotes.
The production faced significant hurdles, including a series of delays from an initial October 2020 release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually premiering in London on September 14, 2021. Despite mixed critical reviews, the film was a commercial success, grossing $506 million worldwide. The sequel's development began as early as January 2019, with writer Kelly Marcel spending months developing the screenplay with Tom Hardy to ensure the story remained centered on their specific take of the characters.
The film also serves as a bridge in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU). While it functions as a standalone sequel, the mid-credits scene introduces a multiverse element, featuring footage of Peter Parker and J. Jonah Jameson from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This creates a layered narrative where the characters are aware of other realities while navigating their own internal conflicts.
