Can a blockbuster action thriller balance star power with a serious social message?
In short: Vettaiyan, a 2024 Tamil-language action thriller, attempts to merge the high-octane charisma of superstar Rajinikanth with a gritty narrative about systemic corruption and extrajudicial killings. While the film achieved significant global box-office numbers, it sparked intense debate over whether its formulaic storytelling undermined its ambitious, socially conscious premise.
Directed by T. J. Gnanavel, Vettaiyan follows Athiyan, an encounter specialist who grapples with the fallout of a mistaken killing while investigating a teacher's murder. The plot evolves into a critique of corporate greed, specifically targeting a scam involving fraudulent educational promises. The film features an ensemble cast, including Amitabh Bachchan in his Tamil debut, alongside Fahadh Faasil and Rana Daggubati. Production was a massive undertaking, shot across multiple Indian cities including Chennai, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, with a budget of 160 crore rupees.
The film’s release on 10 October 2024, coinciding with Vijayadashami, was met with mixed critical reception. Reviewers frequently praised the technical execution and the performances of the lead actors but expressed disappointment with the pacing and a predictable screenplay. Despite becoming the third highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024, it reportedly underperformed commercially, leading to discussions about production losses. The film also faced legal scrutiny, with petitions filed in the Madurai High Court challenging dialogues that allegedly glorified extrajudicial violence.
Beyond its narrative, Vettaiyan is notable for its technical innovations, being the first Tamil film to release with closed captions and audio descriptions. The production also utilized artificial intelligence to recreate the vocals of the late singer Malaysia Vasudevan and to enhance Amitabh Bachchan’s voice for various language versions. While the film has been criticized for failing to fully reconcile its superstar-driven style with the director's previous, more grounded work, Gnanavel has expressed interest in exploring the characters further in a potential prequel.
