From Montreal counterculture to a $5.7 billion media empire and back
In short: Vice began as a niche Montreal magazine focused on skateboarding and drug culture. It eventually transformed into a global digital powerhouse, reaching over 80 territories and securing massive investments from giants like Disney. However, a rapid rise was met with intense scrutiny regarding journalistic ethics and workplace culture.
Founded in Montreal in 1994 as Voice, the publication was rebranded as Vice in 1996 after Suroosh Alvi, Gavin McInnes, and Shane Smith bought out the publisher. The company's evolution saw it move from a print magazine covering alternative scenes to a digital video pioneer. By 2006, following advice from Spike Jonze, it launched VBS.tv, and by 2007, it had expanded into specialized digital channels like Motherboard and Noisey.
The company's growth attracted significant capital, including a $70 million investment from Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox in 2013 and hundreds of millions from A&E Networks. At its peak in 2017, private-equity firm TPG Capital invested $450 million, valuing the company at $5.7 billion. This era saw Vice News gain global attention for its coverage of conflicts in Ukraine and Venezuela, even prompting the BBC to claim it was 'playing catch-up'.
However, this expansion was shadowed by controversy. The Columbia Journalism Review noted instances where Vice allegedly altered footage to increase entertainment value, such as a 2011 Libya documentary. Furthermore, the company faced internal crises, including reports of sexual misconduct settlements and allegations of an unsafe workplace. These pressures, alongside shifting media landscapes, led to a restructuring in 2023 and a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in June 2024, resulting in an acquisition by a Fortress Investment Group-led consortium for $350 million.
Despite these financial and cultural struggles, the brand continues to exist through new partnerships and content distribution, such as its recent collaboration with Savage Ventures.
