In short: Victor Rothschild was a scientist, intelligence officer, and advisor to British prime ministers. Yet, his proximity to the infamous Cambridge Spy Ring sparked decades of suspicion. Despite official clearances and his own denials, allegations persisted that he was the elusive Fifth Man, a claim that remains a subject of intense debate.

Born in 1910, Victor Rothschild was a member of the prominent banking family who moved in elite circles, from the Cambridge Apostles to the corridors of power in Whitehall. During World War II, he served in MI5, earning a George Medal for his dangerous work in explosives and sabotage. His wartime contributions included dismantling German booby traps and running the 'Fifth Column' operation, which identified Nazi sympathizers in London. After the war, he maintained a dual life as a respected scientist at Cambridge and a trusted advisor to both Labour and Conservative governments.

The controversy surrounding his loyalty began with his friendships with Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt, and Kim Philby. Having shared a London flat with Burgess and Blunt, Rothschild became a target of suspicion once the Cambridge Spy Ring was exposed. In 1987, MP Tam Dalyell suggested Rothschild should be prosecuted for his role in security breaches, and a 1994 book by Roland Perry alleged that retired KGB colonels identified him as the 'Fifth Man.' These claims were later dismissed by other researchers and even by the KGB controller Yuri Modin, who clarified that the fifth member was John Cairncross.

Despite these allegations, Rothschild was officially cleared by Margaret Thatcher in the House of Commons, with MI5 records showing 'No Trace' against his name. He spent his later years navigating family feuds at the bank and advising on government policy, including the design of the community charge. An atheist who was interred in a Jewish cemetery, his legacy remains complex: a man who served the British state at the highest levels while forever shadowed by the secrets of his past.
