From kickboxing to the UFC, Volkan Oezdemir's rise and recent suspension
In short: Swiss mixed martial artist Volkan Oezdemir has navigated a high-stakes career, from dominant undefeated starts to championship contention. His journey through the UFC has been marked by explosive knockouts and significant setbacks, including a recent suspension that has paused his ascent in the light heavyweight division.
Born in the French-speaking region of Switzerland to a Kurdish father and Swiss mother, Oezdemir began his professional journey in 2010. He initially built an impressive 9–0 mixed martial arts record before moving to Bellator in 2013. His time in Bellator was brief, marked by a first-round TKO victory over Josh Lanier on 25 October 2013, followed by a second-round loss to Kelly Anundson in April 2014. After his contract was amicably voided, he transitioned to the UFC in 2017.
Oezdemir's UFC tenure has been characterized by high-impact performances. He secured a notable upset victory against Ovince St. Preux on 4 February 2017, earning him Newcomer of the Year and the #6 Fighter of the Year honors in 2017. His striking ability has been highlighted by knockout wins over Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa, the latter of which earned him a Performance of the Night bonus. He has reached the highest levels of competition, facing Daniel Cormier for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship on 20 January 2018.
Despite his successes, his career has faced numerous interruptions. He has dealt with visa issues, injuries such as a broken nose and a knee injury, and legal matters, including an arrest for aggravated battery in November 2017, though charges were dropped in July 2018. Most recently, following a positive test for EPO on 16 February 2026, Oezdemir received a sixteen-month suspension, making him eligible to compete again on 17 June 2027.
As of 20 June 2026, Oezdemir is ranked #8 in the UFC light heavyweight division. His diverse combat background includes professional kickboxing, where he holds a 5–0 record and competed for the Romania-based SUPERKOMBAT Fighting Championship.
