How a former kickboxing champion transitioned to global mixed martial arts dominance
In short: Cédric Doumbé rose from a childhood in Cameroon to become a world-renowned kickboxing champion and a force in mixed martial arts. After dominating the Glory welterweight division, he navigated injuries, regulatory hurdles, and high-stakes tournament bouts to secure his place as a premier athlete in the Professional Fighters League.
Born in Douala, Cameroon, in 1992, Cédric Doumbé moved to France at age nine. Raised by his widowed mother, he eventually abandoned university studies in psychology to pursue full-contact kickboxing. His rise was rapid; by 2016, he was named Fighter of the Year by multiple publications, including Combat Press and Liver Kick. His technical development was bolstered by monthly training sessions at Amsterdam’s Mejiro Gym, where he refined the heavy low-kick style that became his signature.
Doumbé’s kickboxing career was defined by his tenure in Glory, where he became the first French champion in the organization's history after defeating Nieky Holzken in 2016. He went on to record five successful title defenses, the most in the history of the welterweight division. Despite his success, his path was not without obstacles. He faced numerous fight cancellations due to injuries, the COVID-19 pandemic, and administrative complications, including a 2022 incident where a planned UFC bout was scrapped due to medical concerns and regulatory rules regarding professional experience gaps.
In 2023, Doumbé pivoted to mixed martial arts, signing a multi-year agreement with the Professional Fighters League. His debut in the promotion was explosive, featuring a nine-second knockout victory over Jordan Zébo. While his transition has been largely successful, it has also seen unique challenges, such as a 2024 loss to Baissangour Chamsoudinov caused by a piece of glass in his foot. Today, Doumbé remains a prominent figure in the sport, known for his striking prowess and ability to adapt to the evolving demands of professional combat.
