In short: Theodore Robert Beale, known as Vox Day, transitioned from video game developer to one of the most controversial figures in science fiction. Through strategic ballot manipulation and provocative publishing, he attempted to reshape the genre's most prestigious awards, sparking intense backlash and industry-wide debate.

Originally an economist and East Asian Studies graduate from Buckell University, Beale's career began in the tech and gaming sectors. He co-founded the company Fenris Wolf in 1993 and even engineered the WarMouse, an 18-button computer mouse. However, his influence shifted from software to social commentary through his writing and publishing ventures, such as Castalia House, which he founded in Kouvola, Finland, in 2014.

Beale became a central figure in the 'Rabid Puppies' controversy during the 2015 Hugo Awards. Following the 'Sad Puppies' campaign led by Larry Correia, Beale implemented a slate of candidates designed to disrupt the voting process. The strategy was highly effective at placing specific names on the ballot—58 of 67 recommended nominees were included—but the results were polarizing. While the campaign caused several nominees to withdraw to avoid association with Beale, many of his nominations ultimately ranked below 'No Award' in the final tally.

His ideological impact is defined by extreme provocations. A self-described Christian nationalist, Beale has expressed views that led the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) to unanimously expel him after he used derogatory language toward members. His political writings include the 'Sixteen points of the Alt-Right,' which incorporates the 'Fourteen Words' slogan, and arguments against women's suffrage. This combination of literary disruption and far-right activism has led the Wall Street Journal to label him 'the most despised man in science fiction.'
