In short: Wardell Fouse, a Compton gang member known as Poochie, became a central figure in investigations surrounding the 1997 death of the Notorious B.I.G. Though never officially charged, Fouse's life—marked by early violence, Death Row Records associations, and a fatal motorcycle ambush—remains a haunting footnote in hip-hop history.

Born in Kentucky and raised in Compton, California, Wardell Fouse became a member of the Mob Piru Bloods, a subgroup of the Bloods street gang. His history of violence began early; in 1975, at age 14, he admitted to firing a shotgun at a neighbor's house following a dispute. By the 1990s, Fouse was deeply embedded in the orbit of Death Row Records and its head, Suge Knight. He worked as a bodyguard for the label, and Knight reportedly provided him with a Chevrolet Impala, the same model vehicle later identified at the scene of the 1997 murder of Christopher Wallace, known as the Notorious B.I.G.

The investigation into Wallace's death was fraught with controversy and shifting theories. Initial inquiries led by LAPD detective Russell Poole focused on officer David Mack and Amir Muhammad, but the investigation stalled after Poole was ordered to cease his work by Chief Bernard C. Parks. It was not until 2006, when a new investigation led by detective Greg Kading was launched, that Fouse was identified as the primary suspect. Kading concluded that Knight had orchestrated the hit, utilizing Fouse to carry out the shooting. Despite an attempt to extract a confession from Knight via a wired informant, no charges were ever filed against either man.

Fouse's own life ended violently on July 24, 2003, in Compton. While riding his motorcycle, he was shot ten times in the back with an AK-47. Investigators have attributed his death to internal conflicts between the Mob Pirus and the Fruit Town Pirus, a rival Blood set. His legacy has since been cemented in popular culture, appearing as a subject of investigation in the 2018 television series Unsolved and the film City of Lies, which explicitly linked him to the high-profile murder that defined an era of hip-hop tension.
