In short: For years, the city of Volos saw failed attempts to merge its two historic football clubs into a single powerhouse. In 2017, the mayor took a different path: he dissolved an existing team from another region and rebranded it, creating a new professional club that reached the Greek Super League.

The creation of Volos New Football Club in 2017 marked a radical departure from the city's previous football history. After years of unsuccessful negotiations between the local clubs Niki and Olympiakos to form a unified team, Achilleas Beos, the mayor of Volos, initiated a fresh strategy. Rather than forcing a merger, the project involved the dissolution of Pydna Kitros, a club from a different area, which was then renamed and repurposed to serve as the new representative for Volos.

The club's rise was rapid. By taking the spot previously held by Pydna Kitros in the Gamma Ethniki for the 2017–18 season, the team immediately began competing at a professional level. Following a successful campaign that saw them win their group and secure promotion through the playoffs, the club climbed through the divisions. By the 2022–23 season, they had established themselves in the Super League, the top tier of Greek football, finishing the regular season in fifth place.

Infrastructure played a key role in this transition. Initially, the club utilized the Neapoli Municipal Stadium, a 2,500-capacity venue refurbished by the municipality in 2017. However, upon reaching the Super League, the team moved to the much larger Panthessaliko Stadium. Originally constructed for the 2004 Olympic Games, this venue boasts a capacity of 22,700, reflecting the club's ambition to compete on a national stage. Despite their progress, the team has faced challenges, such as the 2022–23 playoff run where inexperience led to nine defeats and a single draw, highlighting the steep learning curve of top-flight competition.

The club's identity remains tied to its unique origins, operating under the name Volos New Football Club, or Volos Elabet for sponsorship purposes. While the squad has seen standout individual performances, such as Paolo Fernandes being named the best player of the 2022–23 season despite limited appearances, the club's trajectory remains a case study in how administrative maneuvering can reshape a city's sporting landscape.
