In short: From a small Nottingham herbalist in 1849 to a multi-billion dollar empire, Boots has navigated dramatic shifts. It has survived ownership changes, pioneered medical research like Ibuprofen, and even operated a lending library, before becoming a cornerstone of modern health and beauty retail.

Founded in 1849 by John Boot, the business grew through the hands of his grandson, who inherited the title Baron Trent. By 1888, it was incorporated as Boots Pure Drug Company Ltd. The company's history is marked by significant diversification and strategic shifts, including a period of American ownership between 1920 and 1933, and a venture into the bicycle and car parts market via Halfords in 1991.

The company's scientific legacy is notable; it developed the painkiller Ibuprofen during the 1960s, a feat that earned it the Queen's Award For Technical Achievement in 1987. However, its research history has not been without controversy. In the 1990s, the withdrawal of the heart failure drug Manoplax due to safety concerns led to the divestment of its prescription drugs division to BASF in 1994.

In the modern era, Boots has undergone massive structural transformations. In 2007, it became the first FTSE 100 company to be taken private by a private equity firm, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Stefano Pessina. Following a merger with Alliance UniChem in 2006, it eventually became a subsidiary of Walgreens Boots Alliance in 2014. In August 2025, Sycamore Partners finished a $10 billion deal, turning Boots into a separate private entity called The Boots Group.

Today, The Boots Group operates 3,912 shops globally, including locations in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Mexico, and Thailand, with annual sales reaching $23.6 billion. It remains a dominant force in the UK and Ireland, providing everything from local pharmacies to specialized optician and hearing care services.
