In short: Formed in 2006 by Nicholas Petricca, Walk the Moon evolved from an independent Cincinnati act into a chart-topping force. While their 2014 hit Shut Up and Dance became a global phenomenon, the band’s legacy is defined by their energetic live traditions, 1980s-inspired synth sounds, and a resilient, collaborative spirit.

Walk the Moon began in 2006 when Nicholas Petricca, then a student at Kenyon College, formed the band and named it after The Police song Walking on the Moon. The group gained early traction with their independent 2010 debut album, I Want! I Want!, and the track Anna Sun, which became a surprise hit in 2011 after an endorsement in an Esquire article. The band’s signature sound, characterized by 1980s keyboard and synthesizer influences, helped them secure a deal with RCA Records in February 2011.

The band’s breakout success arrived with the 2014 single Shut Up and Dance. Inspired by an experience Petricca had at a Los Angeles nightclub where his girlfriend encouraged him to dance, the song was written to serve as an anthem for shedding frustration. It reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Alternative Songs and Hot Adult Contemporary charts. The track’s success was international, reaching the top ten in countries including Australia, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Beyond their studio recordings, Walk the Moon became known for their high-energy live performances, which included a tradition of painting their faces and sharing paint with the audience. Their career saw various shifts, including the departure of band member Ray in 2020 and the release of their fifth album, Heights, in 2021. In July 2023, Petricca announced an indefinite hiatus, followed by the November 2023 release of The Liftaway, a farewell-for-now project featuring new tracks and reimagined versions of their earlier work.
