In short: Semisonic is best known for their 1998 hit Closing Time, a staple of American radio. While listeners often associate the track with the end of a night out, lead singer Dan Wilson revealed the song was actually inspired by the birth of his first child, not a tavern.

Formed in Minneapolis in 1993, Semisonic emerged from the ashes of the band Trip Shakespeare. The trio, consisting of Dan Wilson, John Munson, and Jacob Slichter, navigated a turbulent early career that included being dropped by Elektra Records before finding a home at MCA. Their debut album, Great Divide, arrived in 1996, but it was their 1998 follow-up, Feeling Strangely Fine, that catapulted them into the spotlight.

The band's trajectory was defined by both international success and long hiatuses. While Closing Time became a U.S. phenomenon, their 1999 single Secret Smile found significant traction in the UK, peaking at No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart. Following their 2001 album All About Chemistry, the band members pursued various side projects, including Munson's work with The New Standards and Wilson's solo career. It would take nearly two decades before the group released new material with the 2020 EP, You're Not Alone.

Despite these gaps, the band maintained a strong cultural footprint in their hometown. They are among the few artists to hold multiple stars on the mural at the iconic Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue, an honor journalist Steve Marsh describes as potentially the most prestigious public recognition for an artist in the city. Their legacy is further cemented by the ubiquity of their songs in film and television, from 10 Things I Hate About You to The Office, proving that their influence extends far beyond their initial chart success.

In recent years, the band has experienced a creative resurgence. After celebrating the twentieth anniversaries of their first two albums with commemorative shows and re-releases, they returned to the studio. This culminated in the 2023 release of their full-length album, Little Bit of Sun, featuring collaborations with artists like Jason Isbell. The band continues to evolve, even drawing inspiration from local events in Minneapolis for their 2026 single, Don't Give Up Yet.
