From Sports Agency to THE·TEAM: The Rapid Evolution of a Global Talent Powerhouse
In short: Founded in 2002, the agency known as Wasserman grew from a niche sports marketing firm into a global powerhouse representing elite athletes and musicians. Yet, recent controversies and a major rebranding to THE·TEAM mark a turbulent shift for the company as it navigates high-profile departures and corporate restructuring.
Established in 2002 by Casey Wasserman, the company initially focused on sports marketing and talent management. Through a series of aggressive acquisitions, including the 2006 purchase of the UK-based soccer agency SFX and the 2015 acquisition of the influencer network Cycle, the firm expanded its reach across sports, music, and entertainment. By 2020, the agency had solidified its status as a financial titan, earning $331 million in commissions and securing $5.7 billion in contracts. This growth trajectory saw the firm diversify into music through the 2021 purchase of Paradigm Talent Agency’s music division and into public speaking representation via The Montag Group.
Despite its commercial success, the agency has faced significant legal and reputational challenges. In 2011, MLB pitcher Francisco Rodríguez sued the firm for alleged malpractice, a case settled in 2012. Later, in 2019, the company became embroiled in litigation involving Papa John’s founder John Schnatter, who alleged that a recorded conference call was leaked by the agency’s subsidiary, Laundry Service. These incidents, while damaging, were eclipsed by the fallout following the January 2026 release of the Epstein files, which revealed past email exchanges between Casey Wasserman and Ghislaine Maxwell.
The revelation triggered a wave of public condemnation, leading numerous artists—including Chappell Roan, Odesza, and the Dropkick Murphys—to sever ties with the agency. In February 2026, Casey Wasserman announced he was selling the company. By March 2026, the firm underwent a comprehensive rebranding to THE·TEAM. This period also saw the divestment of its boxing division, Wasserman Boxing, which was sold and rebranded as MF Sports. These events represent a definitive turning point for an organization that spent over two decades building a massive footprint in global talent management.
