In short: WME Group is far more than a Hollywood talent agency. It is a massive holding company that sits at the intersection of sports, media, and entertainment, owning majority stakes in global giants like the UFC and WWE while representing the NFL and NHL.
The company's current identity is the result of a complex series of mergers and rebrandings. The organisation, initially titled William Morris Endeavor (WME), emerged in April 2009 following a union between Endeavor Talent Agency and the William Morris Agency. In 2017, it reorganized into 'Endeavor,' while the general talent agency retained the WME name and the sports agency kept the IMG name. Following a 2025 deal with private equity firm Silver Lake, the company was rebranded as 'WME Group' in 2026.
WME Group's influence in sports is unparalleled. Via TKO Group, this firm holds a majority stake in both the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Its sports reach extends to representing the NFL and NHL, and it manages collegiate athletics for major conferences including the SEC, Big 12, and ACC. By spearheading a consortium to purchase Zuffa (UFC's parent company) for $4.025 billion in 2016, the company secured its lead, marking a record-breaking sports industry buyout at that point.
Beyond sports, the group is a powerhouse in media and production. It owns a 20% stake in Fifth Season and has deep ties to digital advertising and e-commerce. However, its growth has faced regulatory and legal scrutiny. In 2021, the company was forced to divest 80% of its scripted production business to comply with a new franchising deal with the Writers Guild of America, which sought to eliminate 'packaging deals' and limit agency ownership in production companies.
