How a multibillion-dollar sports empire built its footprint from Philadelphia to the global stage
In short: Founded in 2017 by Josh Harris and David Blitzer, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment has rapidly evolved into a powerhouse of venue management and professional sports ownership. With assets valued at $14.6 billion, the company controls major league franchises, esports organizations, and massive infrastructure projects across the United States.
The origins of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) trace back to the professional partnership of Apollo Global Management co-founder Josh Harris and Blackstone executive David Blitzer. Long before formally establishing HBSE in September 2017, the pair had already secured significant stakes in major professional sports, acquiring the Philadelphia 76ers in 2011 and the New Jersey Devils, along with the Prudential Center, in 2013. These early investments provided the foundation for a diversified portfolio that now spans basketball, hockey, esports, and racing.
The company’s growth strategy has been marked by aggressive expansion and strategic consolidation. In 2016, they entered the esports market by purchasing Dignitas, later expanding their digital footprint in 2019 by acquiring Clutch Gaming for $30 million and merging the entities under New Meta Entertainment. Beyond team ownership, HBSE has positioned itself as a central player in sports infrastructure and consulting. Through the 2018 establishment of Elevate Sports Ventures, in partnership with the San Francisco 49ers and Creative Artists Agency, they expanded into event marketing and ticketing. Their influence extends to facility management, including the development of the 76ers Fieldhouse in Wilmington and the management of non-NFL events at Northwest Stadium.
Recent years have seen the company navigate complex transitions and high-stakes bids. While they unsuccessfully pursued the New York Mets and Chelsea Football Club, they successfully acquired a minority stake in Joe Gibbs Racing in 2023. Leadership shifts have also been pivotal, with the 2025 appointment of former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers as company president. Furthermore, the company’s future is set to include a new Philadelphia WNBA franchise, slated to begin play in 2030, and a collaborative arena project with Comcast Spectacor in South Philadelphia, following the abandonment of their previous 76 Place at Market East proposal in early 2025.
