How the World Poker Tour turned a card game into global television spectacle
In short: Launched in 2002, the World Poker Tour transformed poker from a casino pastime into a televised sport. By introducing hole card cameras and a structured tournament circuit, it created a new entertainment category that has since expanded into international markets, digital gaming platforms, and a multi-million dollar corporate asset.
Founded by attorney and television producer Steven Lipscomb, the World Poker Tour (WPT) debuted in 2003 on the Travel Channel. Its innovation was simple but revolutionary: integrating cameras into the poker table to reveal players' face-down hole cards. Because gaming regulations prohibit commentators from watching a live feed of these cards, the analysis provided by hosts like Vince Van Patten and Tony Dunst is recorded after the tournament concludes. This production style helped the show reach audiences in over 150 countries and territories.
The WPT operates a high-stakes Main Tour, typically featuring buy-ins between $3,500 and $25,000. Winners receive a WPT Champions Cup and a titanium-and-diamond bracelet crafted by Tiffany and Company. The brand has evolved significantly since its inception, undergoing multiple ownership changes. Originally launched by WPT Enterprises, Inc., it was acquired by PartyGaming for $12.3 million in 2009, later sold to Ourgame International Holdings for $35 million in 2015, and eventually purchased by Element Partners for $105 million in 2021.
Beyond the televised events, the WPT has diversified into subscription clubs like ClubWPT and social casino platforms such as PlayWPT. The tour also maintains a rigorous points system to determine a Player of the Year, which was adjusted in Season 9 to account for prize pool sizes and entry numbers. While the tour has faced legal challenges—including a 2006 antitrust lawsuit from prominent poker professionals regarding release forms and likeness rights—it remains a dominant force in the industry, currently producing its 24th season for the FanDuel Sports Network.
