The explosive end of the Mega Powers at WrestleMania V
In short: In 1989, professional wrestling's most beloved duo reached a breaking point. What began as a unified front between Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage dissolved into a bitter, high-stakes rivalry that headlined one of the era's most famous pay-per-view events.
The 'Mega Powers' reached a breaking point during WrestleMania V, which took place at the Atlantic City Convention Hall on April 2, 1989. This powerful pair had been unstoppable since late 1987, when Hogan assisted Savage in his Intercontinental Championship victory over The Honky Tonk Man. However, the partnership began to fracture due to the involvement of Savage's valet, Miss Elizabeth. Hogan's requests to have Elizabeth accompany him to the ring led to several incidents where she was placed in physical danger, causing significant friction between the two champions.
The dissolution of the team was marked by a series of escalating conflicts throughout early 1989. In January, during the Royal Rumble, Hogan accidentally eliminated Savage. By February, during a match against the Twin Towers, a chaotic sequence saw Savage land on Elizabeth after being thrown through the ropes. The tension finally exploded on February 2, 1989, during a confrontation where Savage accused Hogan of jealousy and lusting after Elizabeth. The altercation turned physical, with Savage striking Hogan with a championship belt and assaulting officials, eventually leading to a formal challenge for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania V.
The event itself featured 14 matches, including a high-profile clash between Rick Rude and Ultimate Warrior for the Intercontinental title. While the Hogan versus Savage main event was a critical success, retrospective reviews have been mixed regarding the overall quality and quantity of the undercard matches. The event was also notable for its heavy sponsorship by Donald Trump, whose Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino served as the primary sponsor, and featured a 'WrestleMania Rap' performed by Run-DMC.
